A huge number of Belize populations are living in poverty. Alarmingly, the percentage of poverty affected people in rural areas is almost as high as in urban areas. In addition, further 14 percent of the households are believed to be vulnerable to poverty. This piece of information is shocking as more and more populace is susceptible to poverty.
Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the Belize people and huge numbers of rural poor natives are dependent on agriculture. Both young and adults work on their farm to sustain their livelihood and it has been estimated that these are the people who are mostly poor. It has also been estimated by the National Poverty Assessment that majority of the poor people are farmers.
Furthermore it has been found that young people are most vulnerable to poverty in Belize. 17 years and younger children live below the poverty line and this incidence is higher in the rural areas. Most of the countries young populations are unemployed.
When the causes of poverty are examined it has been found that the rural producers employ very low technology for production. Therefore productivity is stumpy. And even if in some cases when farmers have the knowledge of modern technology they lack the resources to obtain it. Also farmers cannot adopt enhanced way of cropping due to short of financial resources and the end result is insufficient yields and inadequate income.
