Illiteracy is a major problem in Pakistan. There are many factors which is responsible for the low literacy rate in Pakistan. There is inequality as regards education system in Pakistan where public and private sector is differentiated with different medium of instruction. Regional disparity is also a cause for the low level of literacy rate in Pakistan. Gender discrimination is stands as a major hindrance in the way of literacy. Girls are not that much encouraged to go to school which has increased the gap between the boys-girls ratio.
There is lack of technical education which is also a cause of concern for the populace. In addition to this, very less funds are used for education sector which is a meager 1.5 or 2.0 percent of the total GDP. Good and quality education is only possible when trained teachers are available. The Government school teachers are not trained enough and since they are not professionally trained therefore quality education could not expected from them. Another important cause of illiteracy in Pakistan is widespread poverty. Due to poverty, parents are not inclined to send their children to schools and prefer to send them to Madrassas instead, where education is free.
