Disabled people in Ghana are facing lots of difficulties while venturing out for job. Their activities are already trimmed down due to disabilities which affect their life, work and learning. However, the environments on which they survive and the society on which they are existing play an important role in the life of the disabled.
Ghana’s 7 to 10percent of the population are comprised of disabled people. The people who are disabled are likely to be poor. They are discriminated upon and are subject to social isolation. Education is a far off dream for the disabled populace as they are themselves sometimes not inclined to go for schooling. Furthermore, the families of the disabled people also discriminate them at times and do not prefer to spend for their education.
The employment scenario is already very competitive in Ghana and as such the disabled ones are finding it hard to get engaged somewhere. The disabled people face competition in the job market as the employers hesitate to hire them. However, unemployment among disabled women is much more than disabled man. The communities also have narrow outlook which is posing a major problem for the disabled persons. For instance, in African tradition disability is considered as a curse for which the family is cut off from the community. The consequence is the disabled people do not get the opportunity to unleash their true potential.
