Discriminating anyone on the basis of race is commonly known as racism. It is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another race. It is also the belief that different races should remain segregated from one another. Racism is not a new trend. It has been in existent since time immemorial. Racism means discriminating one another as regards, skin color, language, customs, place of birth and the like. Racism is the root cause of many evils in the society. Violence, wars, slavery and discrimination at various levels, all are the result of racism.
Racism among Asians, Africans, Easterners and the like were all prominently visible during the past. However, the racist tendencies on the part of Western powers towards non-Westerners were more prominent and had a momentous impact on history. No one can overlook the enslavement of Africans in the New World by the West. It was the worst form of racism.
Racism has become a global issue. It is totally uncalled for and it should be wiped out completely from our society. It is people’s destiny where they are born, their religion, they way they live and the like. If only people could understand the deeper meaning of it. Everyone can certainly do something to help ending the racist tendencies of the doer. But first of all you need to protect yourself from these; you need to speak out against racism. If not, your silence can be misinterpreted by others. It can be taken as an unstated approval of prejudice. So therefore, use your right and do your responsibility to speak out against racism.
In addition with speaking out loud and showing your disapproval against discrimination, you can also help to stop racism in all form. March 21 is celebrated as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Actively take part in it ask your friends to participate in the same. Also, you can suggest your local newspapers to publish a special column on the racial and cultural diversity of your community. Help in developing positive race relations and lend a hand to community to develop a policy statement in opposition to all forms of racial discrimination.
